Hydrogen cars are classified as fuel cell vehicles. The cars have electric
motors. A fuel cell stack converts hydrogen gas that is stored in the car.
Oxygen is drawn from the air and mixes with the hydrogen to create electricity.
Hydrogen is an energy carrier and is not a fuel. It stores energy somewhat like
a battery. Finally, with the help of two batteries that manage peak demand
situations, the electric motor makes the vehicle move.
The hydrogen is stored at very high pressure in a tank at the rear of the
vehicle, so there are some issues with issuing and storing the hydrogen, which
must be kept at -423 degrees Fahrenheit. The hydrogen vents off at about 4
percent a day and the tank will have to be very well insulated. The venting
process would use up quite a bit of fuel if the vehicle goes unused for a week
or more. Fuel Economy.gov has a basic image and description of a hydrogen car
system.
