Tony Whitehorn, Hyundai UK’s managing director, thinks fuel cell technology is
the future. ‘It is the ultimate solution and Hyundai has long been at the
forefront of fuel cell technology development,’ he says. ‘Alternative methods,
such as EVs and hybrids and of course constantly improving the traditional
combustion engine, are interim propositions until fuel cell technology becomes a
true reality. Hyundai is investing in all solutions, which illustrates our
commitment to reducing emissions in the global car park.’
Honda won the first leg of the hydrogen race with a limited run of 200 FCX
Clarity vehicles in 2008, the first dedicated hydrogen vehicle. The Japanese
firm says mass-produced hydrogen cars will appear in countries with the
infrastructure to support them by 2015.
If British motorists are to be convinced by the power of hydrogen, there must be
an infrastructure. Hyundai has just signed a deal aimed at testing hydrogen
vehicles in Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Iceland – which are all making inroads
into the widespread supply of hydrogen. Britain, attempting to keep up, has ten
operational hydrogen refuelling stations across the country with more being
commissioned. Hydrogen buses already operate in London and black cabs are being
trialled.
However, environmental groups warn hydrogen is not an eco silver bullet as the
energy still needs to be generated. Hydrogen cars could help drive forward a
clean transport revolution but a number of challenges remain,’ says Friends Of
The Earth’s transport campaigner, Richard Dyer. ‘Making hydrogen can also have a
climate impact, so we need more effort to make this process greener.’
